Acknowledgments

At Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London, I would like to thank Professor Tom Corby, associate dean of research, for his encouragement when I first mentioned the idea of a book on breath. Thank you also to the colleagues and students there who create such a vibrant and creative working environment, to Jamie Brassett and Marketa Uhlirova with whom I have shared responsibilities and Debi Kenny for her wonderful support.

I would also like to acknowledge University of Minnesota Press and the editorial team for their help. I am especially grateful to Professor Gabriele Schwab for her generous review of the book manuscript, her insightful comments and endorsement of this project. A huge thank you to Eric Lundgren for his enthusiastic response to my book proposal for the Forerunners series and for his warm support and encouragement throughout the stages of publication.

As ever I am indebted to the artists whose artworks have been the inspiration for Out of Breath: Vulnerability of Air in Contemporary Art. I would like to thank them for their comments and responses to my text and for their vital contribution to this book.

Thank you to my family, friends, and everyone who helped me navigate the last twelve months. Nicholas Minns’s editing and comments have been invaluable, as have been the sharing of ideas, insightful conversations and much more.

This book is dedicated to all those who struggle for breath and to my parents who no longer breathe.
