Hilary M. Schor

Hilary Schor is professor in the Departments of English and Comparative Literature at the University of Southern California. She studies contemporary fiction, feminist theory, and the widest possible range of Victorian literature, from serial fiction, narrative poetry, art criticism, proto-sociology, and urban history. In addition to dozens of articles, she is the author of Scheherezade in the Marketplace: Elizabeth Gaskell and the Victorian Novel, Dickens and the Daughter of the House, and Curious Subjects: Women and the Trials of Realism. She is currently writing a book on Jews, women, and other Victorian legal fictions. Her work has been supported by the American Council of Learned Societies, John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, National Endowment for the Humanities, Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study, Stanford University, and University of Southern California. She has served as Chair of Gender Studies, President of the Academic Senate, and in 2006–7 she served as Dean of Undergraduate Programs for the College of Letters, Arts & Sciences. She is currently co-director of the Center for Law, History, and Culture, a joint center sponsored by University of Southern California Dornsife College and the Gould School of Law. Schor earned a BA in British/American Literature from Scripps College and a PhD in English from Stanford University.
