As the video begins, a twenty-something looking man with a light complexion can be seen in the center of the screen. Behind this young man is a large and mounted TV screen. The TV screen is off. The man has trimmed brown hair, brown facial hair and is wearing eyeglasses. He has a white button-down shirt with a blue necktie that is flecked with a lighted color. Also, around his neck is a yellow lanyard that has Georgia Tech lettering in navy blue.
Chase: Hello, my name is Chase Tauscher. I am a four-year student in a Excel Program at Georgia Tech. The Excel Program is a four-year certificate program for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
After Chase introduces himself, an unseen interviewer begins to ask Chase questions.
Interviewer: Okay, thank you. So, what is your favorite part of the Excel Program?
As the video continues, Chase remains in the same position. He takes his time to process the interviewer’s question before responding. As he responds to the question, viewers see him raise up a pile of papers and read from a script.
Chase: The good friends that I have made and the fun events that I have prepared (?) in like Game Night and Cooking Group. For Game Night, I got to host and play board games, eat snacks and watch anime with my friends.
When Chase is finished speaking, he lowers his pile of papers and looks up at the screen to wait for the next question.
Interviewer: That’s awesome. So, what are some challenges that you have faced while going to college?
After the interviewer poses the second question, Chase pauses and glances downward toward his notes. He then raises the notes up, finds his place and begins to respond.
Chase: Some challenges that I’ve faced were figuring out where everything is. Another challenge that I have faced was organizing my schedule along with my assignments. Another challenge that I have faced was looking at my phone while walking.
Once again, as Chase finishes his response, he lowers his notes and look up at the screen, indicating he is ready for the next question.
Interviewer: Okay, and what skills are you using as you transition?
Chase picks up his notes and immediately begins reading his response.
Chase: One skill that I am still developing is improving my typing speed. Another skill that I developed is improving my stuttering. Another skill that I’ve developed is having better communication by not staring, maintaining appropriate eye contact. The last skill that I’ve developed is how to enter and exit a conversation.
As Chase completes his response, he swivels slightly in his chair, lowers his notes, and look up at the camera to await the next question.
Interviewer: Okay, and in what ways have you grown while attending the Excel Program?
Chase again picks up his notes and begins reading his response.
Chase: The ways that I have grown are by becoming confident in myself and being able to confront others and sympathize with their feelings.
Chase lowers his notes and waits for the next question.
Interviewer: That sounds great. So those are all the questions that I have for you.
Chase looks directly at the camera.
Chase: Thank you for getting to know me and the other people in the Excel Program. Have a nice day.
