Acknowledgments

I’d like to thank Seija Ridell and Jani Vuolteenaho, organizers of the “Spectacular/Ordinary/Contested Media City” conference at the Helsinki Collegium for Advanced Studies in May 2014; the conference afforded me the opportunity to share an early version of this text as a keynote. Rebecca Ross provided much valuable feedback and encouragement, and an anonymous reviewer of this manuscript helped me to fine-tune many arguments. I also owe a great debt of gratitude to Josie Holzman, who assisted with the collection of all the images you see here, and to Rory Solomon, Jane Pirone, and Jessica Irish, with whom I thought about and tinkered with maps over the past several years.

Thanks, too, to colleagues who’ve discussed with me the preliminary ideas that have taken shape here, and who’ve allowed me to reprint or adapt portions of previous publications for use in this text.
